David de Gea has come out in support of Jose Mourinho, describing the 55-year-old as a “great manager”.
The Spaniard is enjoying his finest ever season at Old Trafford since arriving in 2011, claiming a total of 21 clean sheets.
Talk of him moving to Real Madrid has largely abated since Mourinho’s arrival; the Champions League winners have set their sights on other targets – namely Roma keeper Alisson – and De Gea is understood to be more relaxed at Man United.
And De Gea, when asked about his boss, was quick to hail the way Mourinho has transmitted a resilient winning mentality to the Manchester United squad.
“We’ve got a great manager,” he said.
“He’s very experienced, he’s won everything there is to win in the game. What he is really good at is transmitting his winning mentality to the group.”
You get the feeling that this Man United squad has far more respect for Mourinho than they ever did for Louis van Gaal, who joylessly and unsuccessfully imposed methods on United’s style of play that had never been used in the Premier League before -methods that eventually sucked the life out of players altogether.
Mourinho, I’m sure, can be a difficult figure to deal with at times, but every man in that squad knows he is a winner, someone who knows how to negotiate life at the top level and win trophies.
He has presence. He has belief in himself. He has a kind of theatre about him, almost. And he certainly has the respect of his players, who have now reached three finals in two years under his management.
