Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho admitted he was disappointed with fans for their reaction to one of Scott McTominay‘s in-game decisions.
The youngster once more started in the crucial clash with Liverpool as he continued his ever impressive form much to supporters’ delight.
McTominay was partnered alongside Nemanja Matic against the Reds’ midfield trio but the pair put in a hell of a shift to keep them at bay.
The moment in question is when the academy product had the opportunity to help his side break with the ball but decided to hold onto their possession which frustrated some fans who wanted to attack.
With the result finely poised at 2-1 in United’s favour, Mourinho argued that Scott did the correct thing and was disappointed to hear supporters vocally express their dissatisfaction.
According to Sport 360, Jose said: “The fans they can do what they want. I am not upset at all with that reaction [about Rashford]. But I am upset with the reaction they had with Scott McTominay.
“A kid of 20 years old was making all the right decisions and they wanted him to make the wrong decisions. When he decides to break the intensity of the game, it was a wonderful solution and the fans reacted against the kid.
“That was the bad one. To react against me, that was not the problem.”
Other than that small piece of controversy, the Scotsman was excellent once again, recovering well from being hauled off at half time in the Red Devils’ previous match vs Crystal Palace.
Scott McTominay proved his ability to perform even on the big stage for the second time having played so well against Chelsea as well.
Jose Mourinho clearly rates the midfielder highly and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect him- even if it’s from the club’s own fans.
In the end McTominay’s decision proved to be the correct one as Manchester United held onto the result and came away with a crucial three points.
Mourinho’s inclination was always to protect the current scoreline and so it made sense that he would encourage Scott to not take any chances.
