Jose Mourinho is considering a summer move for FC Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, according to Spanish outlet Sport.
Umtiti joined Barcelona, who are favourites to finish top of La Liga this season, a couple of years ago for £22.5m and has a reported release clause of £53m.
The Frenchman is seeking a new contract at the Nou Camp, demanding a wage rise after excelling in the last season and becoming one of the Catalan side’s key players.
Now 24, Umtiti has developed fantastically and Manchester United are keen on bringing him to Old Trafford to partner Ivorian Eric Bailly in central defence.
Mourinho would be willing to offer Umtiti around €9m in wages per season to make the move to the Premier League.
His current deal expires in 2021, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Umtiti was using interest from Man United to force Barcelona to offer him a bigger deal.
However, it would be similarly unsurprising if United were interested in a 24-year-old who has made 30 appearances for one of Europe’s top clubs this season in defence, missing games only for a muscle injury and occasional suspensions.
No English media outlet is covering the story, apart from citing Sport, and thus it seems a classic case of a player using United’s name and need for a defender for their own benefit. Memories of Sergio Ramos, anyone?
