Now former Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed how David Beckham previously encouraged him to go to America and join Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Swedish icon has recently had his contract mutually terminated by Jose Mourinho and wasted no time in disclosing his new club.
Many fans expected Ibrahimovic to make the eventual move to the MLS but no one really saw his contract being terminated before the season came to a close.
The powerful striker recovered remarkably well from his horrific injury that he sustained last season but then succumbed to another knock after returning.
He’s failed to since make an appearance and it appears as though Mourinho isn’t eager to hold onto him, allowing him to leave at a crucial part of the season.
According to Metro, Zlatan said to Major League Soccer: “I met David [Beckham] when I played in PSG and he talked a lot about Galaxy, the experience he had in America, he was all positive.
“He was like: ‘You should come over, go over, and try it out, play there’ and he said everything is fantastic, it’s in progress, but to be part of it is something amazing and something he was proud of.
“So I’m just happy to get all these words because it makes it easier for you when you have to choose whatever you want to do for the next step.
“And like I said, this thing was supposed to happen before but it didn’t happen, but it’s happening now, so it’s the destiny.”
It was unlikely for the former PSG man to ever truly challenge Romelu Lukaku for the starting XI spot but he was at least expected to provide decent cover for him.
Perhaps Alexis Sanchez’s arrival and versatility meant there wasn’t a real need for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to hang around anymore.
It could be that Jose’s respect and admiration for his player meant that he was happy to allow the forward to move to the MLS now rather than later.
With Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all capable of leading the line it was unlikely that Ibrahimovic would truly get any game time either.
He at least leaves having known he contributed hugely to Manchester United’s successes last season and did enough to carve himself out a little piece in the club’s history.
