Manchester United target Samuel Umtiti is edging closer to leaving Barcelona in the summer amid a continued impasse regarding terms on a new contract, according to reports from Spain.
The Frenchman, an integral component of Ernesto Valverde’s side this season, has a release clause of €60m on his current deal, which expires in 2021.
Barcelona are keen to address such a comparatively low release clause – well within Man United’s reach – but have so far refused to satisfy Umtiti’s financial demands due to the cost of Philipe Coutinho’s transfer and Antoine Griezmann’s arrival in the summer.
And according to Spanish media outlet SPORT, the defender looks set to leave the Camp Nou after reaching an impasse with Barcelona chiefs.
The report also states that Jose Mourinho has ‘personally called’ Umtiti and told him that a package worth £7.8m a year – far more than what the La Liga side have offered – would be waiting for him at Old Trafford.
Some reports have claimed that Barcelona, having splashed out €160m on Coutinho and handed Lionel Messi a massive new deal, literally cannot hand Umtiti a new contract until next season due to Financial Fair Play regulations.
By that time, of course, United may well have tempted Umtiti – the second best player at Barcelona this season behind Messi – to the Premier League with an offer he couldn’t refuse.
