The Manchester United board have agreed to sell a trio of full-backs this summer as Jose Mourinho continues to change his squad.
It comes as no surprise that young Luke Shaw will be moved on in the next transfer window after falling out with Mourinho. The Portuguese boss has publicly criticised the left-back on a number of occasions, most prolifically in the last couple of weeks, drawing great controversy.
Duncan Castles reports that the Man United board has agreed to allow Mourinho to sell on Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian as well as Shaw.
All three players were brought in by Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal. Blind was brought in from Ajax and has had some success as a utility player, arriving alongside van Gaal after the 2014 World Cup.
However, he’s never tied down a regular starting spot in the United side, being played all across the pitch in various systems. Matteo Darmian had a bright start at United, with comparisons to Gary Neville, after becoming the first player to join the Reds from Torino since Denis Law.
Antonio Valencia’s excellent conversion to right-back and Ashley Young’s good job filling in at left-back shows how Darmian has failed to meet expectations.
Mourinho will be looking for a new left-back to replace Shaw and the Daily Record suggest United will target Celtic 20-year-old Kieran Tierney, who presents a cheaper alternative to primary target Alex Sandro, of Juventus.
Brazilian Sandro would cost in excess of €70m whereas due to Celtic’s lesser financial position, Tierney could cost just over £20m.
A complication may present itself if Celtic manage to sell striker Moussa Dembele for a significant fee, which will allow them to demand more for Tierney.
