Wayne Rooney fires hilarious dig at Jamie Carragher

Wayne Rooney aimed a brilliant dig at Jamie Carragher over Liverpool’s recent lack of silverware whilst appearing on Monday Night Football.

The 33-year-old, who became Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer last season, rejoined Everton over the summer and has 12 goals to his name so far.

He was invited on Monday Night Football last night to replace Gary Neville as Chelsea suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford.

And Rooney, when asked by Carragher about whether the current trio of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane reminded him of the ruthless triumvirate of himself, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, had the perfect response.

“The difference we had is Premier League winners’ medals,” he said. “We had real quality behind us and the defence was solid. For them three to get to the level we were at, they need that wall behind them.”

“I think they are very dangerous. Firmino works very hard to win the ball back and they have a lot of pace. As good as they are, Salah takes them to the next level.”

Harry Kane became the first ever player to reach 100 Premier League goals having not claimed a single major trophy against Liverpool on Sunday, and it felt fitting that such a strange milestone came against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The front three at Anfield, just like Kane, deserves praise for being consistently effective going forward this season, with at least one of the trio bound to claim a goal on every outing.

But these achievements, in the long run, amount to very little aside from being, well, just very good achievements. They may be proficient going forward, sure, but Rooney is right to highlight that there is no title-winning pedigree at Liverpool to accompany these feats.
