Sir Alex Ferguson made a point of telling Jose Mourinho to give Scott McTominay further minutes in the first team this season after the Munich Air Disaster memorial service at Old Trafford.
McTominay made his first senior start against Crystal Palace in May and impressed with a series of dynamic displays over pre-season.
He has continued to feature under Mourinho as a result, making 11 appearances and recently impressing with a measured display in the Premier League against Huddersfield Town.
And as he passed Sir Alex, the Scot had a few words of advice for him before making it clear to Mourinho that he was a player with a future at Old Trafford.
Check out Jose Mourinho’s reaction when Sir Alex Ferguson tells him to pick Scott McTominay more often. Brilliant. #mufc [reddit] pic.twitter.com/r0fTuSgG7K

To see the biggest – and most successful – proponent of youth in the modern game still hammering home to Manchester United’s current manager the importance of giving young talents a chance at Old Trafford is a truly warming sight, and would have reinforced in the mind of Mourinho the notion that, unlike with other top six clubs, this is a place where youth really can flourish.
And he certainly likes McTominay, or ‘The Kid’ as he continues to call him, inviting comparisons with the bond formed between Ferguson and Darren Fletcher. Some supporters haven’t quite warmed to the 20-year-old yet but Mourinho clearly values his calculated locomotion in the middle and capacity to move the ball simply but effectively.
And there aren’t better endorsements for any youth player than the seal of approval from the Gaffer himself.
