Romelu Lukaku has insisted he had no worries about his lack of goals against top six opposition this season before netting against Chelsea on Sunday.
The Belgian put in a Man of the Match performance for Manchester United with his best display for the club since joining from Everton for around £75m last summer.
He scored a first half equaliser for Man United after Willian had given Chelsea the lead at Old Trafford. Jesse Lingard scored the winner for the Reds, but mainly due to the fantastic work and hold-up play of Lukaku, who tricked his way two defenders before delivering a perfect cross to Lingard’s head.
Lukaku has silenced many of his critics with his performance at the weekend, but he says he had no worries over his previously poor record against big teams.
“We had to work really hard for that win, we were well prepared and we did our best today,” Lukaku told Sky Sports after the game.
“At the end of the day I just want to work hard for the team, and if I improve I’m really satisfied.”
Questioned on the criticism that had been coming Lukaku’s way ahead of the clash against his former club and the Premier League champions, Lukaku said it didn’t affect him.
“Not really. I always work hard, so to get the three points is great for us,” is all Lukaku was willing to say, looking to change the subject.
Lukaku was clearly frustrated by the line of questioning, but he’ll have gone home delighted on Sunday after a truly brilliant performance leading the line for United. There is still much to work on in Lukaku’s game, but his hold-up play has steadily been building in the last two months and showed it’s value to Jose Mourinho’s side against Chelsea.
