A second-half Jesse Lingard header saw Chelsea drop out of the top four following their third defeat in four Premier League games.
Àlvaro Morata, who made a long-awaited return to the starting line-up, struck the crossbar after just five minutes, connecting with a superb volleyed cross from Marcos Alonso.
The game then became cagey, as is usually the case when these two meet, before two goals in the space of seven minutes sparked the match into life. Willian, who has now scored four goals in his last three games, finished off a lovely flowing move to give Chelsea the lead but United replied through Romelu Lukaku’s smart move and finish – a surprise considering his abysmal record against top-six opposition.
Chelsea seemed to be content with settling for a draw in the second-half, but by sitting back they invited hoards of United pressure, with Lukaku’s acrobatic effort requiring a fingertip save from Thibaut Courtois. Just 15 minutes remained for Chelsea to hold out, but a brilliant curling cross from Lukaku found the head of substitute Lingard, whose header flew past a static Courtois. Morata had a goal wrongly called offside late on, but in the end, United held on to claim a precious three-points in the hunt for a Champions League spot.
The loss leaves Chelsea two points adrift of Tottenham in fourth, who had picked up a late win away to Crystal Palace prior to kick-off at Old Trafford.
