Michy Batshuayi enjoyed a debut to remember as Borussia Dortmund travelled to Koln on Friday night.
On paper, a routine victory looked likely for Dortmund, but Peter Stoger’s former side have enjoyed a strong upturn in form recently.
The Belgian striker made his first Bundesliga start after joining Dortmund on transfer deadline day as a direct replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Batshuayi would have been keen to hit the ground running after scoring twice for Chelsea in his last appearance.
It took the forward 35 minutes to open his account after spurning a couple of earlier chances.
An instinctive poacher’s finish inside the box put the German side ahead.
It could have been two for Batshuayi, who thought he had scored twice, only for a close-range finish to have been ruled out by VAR.
While there was some confusion about the decision late in the first half, replays showed that the striker was marginally offside.
The drama continued in the second half as Batshuayi reacted quickly to a neat pass from Christian Pusilic before prodding the ball past Timo Horn.
In what was an open and frantic affair, the game finished 3-2, with Andre Schürrle finding a winner late on.
On the whole, Batshuayi will be delighted to open his account for Dortmund so quickly.
Again there are question marks about the consistency of the striker, especially considering he could have easily come away from the game with three or four goals to his name.
However, if his first start is anything to go by, the Belgian may well impress a few during his brief stint in Germany.
