Juventus have made Matteo Darmian their main transfer priority ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports from Italy.
The Old Lady approached Manchester United over the possibility of signing Darmian on a loan basis in the summer but Jose Mourinho refused to entertain the idea after the Italian’s impressive end to the 2016/17 campaign.
But the full-back’s recent poor form, seen most notably against Bristol City and Yeovil Town, has rendered him surplus to requirements at Old Trafford this season.
And according to Italian media outlet Calico Mercato, Juventus remain keen on securing Darmian’s services as they look to bolster their options at the back over the summer.
Most – if not all – Man United fans would have no problem with this deal going through. Darmian’s last Premier League start came in October and his presence at Old Trafford feels more incongruous with each game that passes.
Any of the defensive nous that typified his earlier performances in a United shirt has all but disappeared. He looks turgid on and off the ball, almost as if time itself is going slower for him.
His application has never been a problem. You sense Darmian really does want to succeed on this stage, but he has, over the last few months, started to look like a relic from a failed Louis van Gaal era, and a move away feels like the only logical option.
