Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois has issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to Real Madrid amid interest for David de Gea, insisting his heart was still with the Spanish capital.
The European champions appeared to have abandoned their pursuit of De Gea over the summer and placed emphasis on securing the services of Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga instead.
But following Arrizabalaga’s decision to extend his contract with Bilbao, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has confirmed that Madrid will make efforts to sign either De Gea or Courtois in the summer, adding that signing the latter would be easier.
And the Belgian, speaking to Sport Foot magazine, has given the reigning La Liga champions encouragement by insisting he would return to Spain in the future.
“It’s well known my personal situation is connected to the city of Madrid. My two children live there with their mother,” he said.
“As a situation, it’s not always easy. My heart is in Madrid; it’s logical and understandable. One day I’ll return to Madrid. I love Spain, I loved that city, I spent three wonderful years there.
“If Real are interested, they have to contact Chelsea. We’ll see, but they have never done so. If they’re really interested, my personal situation could affect it. The family aspect is priceless. But I repeat, for the moment I’m busy talking to Chelsea to extend.”
That last paragraph, I think, is the most telling, with Courtois basically stating that if Madrid came for him he would sign up straight away, alongside implying that they should present him with an offer sooner rather than later given that talks over a new deal have opened with Chelsea.
The wheels are coming off at Chelsea in very similar fashion to how they did with Mourinho back in 2015, and while De Gea remains relaxed about his current situation, you sense Courtois would jump at the opportunity to swap Stamford Bridge for the Bernabeu.
