Jose Mourinho looks set to make his spell at Manchester United his longest at any club, and with great success, according to one of his former players.
The Portuguese has been backed to win the Premier League title next season, with the Reds current sitting 13 points behind leaders and local rivals Manchester City.
Dmitri Alenichev, who scored for Mourinho in both the 2003 UEFA Cup Final and 2004 UEFA Champions League Final at FC Porto, admitted Man United will have to wait, and that they aren’t one of the favourites for the UEFA Champions League, but insisted United’s future is bright.
Mourinho signed a contract extension at United recently to keep him at the club until 2020, and Alenichev believes he’ll at least see out his current deal at Old Trafford, describing him as ‘indispensable’ to the club currently.
“If I am honest, yes, I think [Mourinho] will stay at United for at least another three years. He is the kind of manager that Manchester United need, he is indispensable to them,” Alenichev told RT Sport.
“Currently Manchester City are outdoing every team in the Premier League. But I think if Mourinho stays – the club hierarchy can decide that – if he stays, then even as soon as next year Man United have a real chance of becoming Premier League champions.”
On the club’s Champions League chances, Alenichev believes they are slim, and once again United are behind their local rivals and Pep Guardiola, but admitted that the competition can throw up a surprise.
“Maybe the favourites will be more Real Madrid, or Manchester City, or Barcelona,” Alenichev added.
“I wouldn’t put United first in the list of favourites to win the Champions League, but in football all sorts of surprises get thrown up. Who knows, maybe even United can win it.”
Mourinho’s side are preparing to face Sevilla in the first knockout stages of Europe’s elite club competition.
