Jose Mourinho has hailed Paul Pogba’s attitude to being dropped to the substitutes bench against Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.
The Portuguese punished Pogba, despite insisting he was not doing so, for a poor performance away at Wembley to Tottenham Hotspur as Machester United were beaten 2-0.
Scott McTominay, the 20-year-old academy graduate, replaced Pogba in the side before the Frenchman came on as a sub in the second half.
Mourinho was pleased with his starman’s reaction to the decision.
“The reaction you saw, coming to the pitch with great desire to play,” Mourinho said.
“At half-time he was already because I can analyse body language. He was already at half time showing he was ready. He showed the way he took it in a very professional way.”
It’s good to hear. Pogba is charismatic, unique and high-profile. But combining that with a mentality of accepting being dropped is perfect.
Too many egos in a dressing room clash. Fantastically talented players often have huge egos. If Pogba can provide United his quality without having that ego, it’s great news for the club.
The 24-year-old will likely return to the starting line-up when United face Newcastle United away from home at St. James’ Park next Sunday.
