Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has revealed that Real Madrid will make another bid to prize David de Gea away from Manchester United in the summer.
The 27-year-old famously came close to moving to the Bernabeu back in 2015, only for documentation issues to cause the move to collapse.
Madrid have since maintained their interest in De Gea but nothing concrete has ever emerged, with the Spaniard seemingly relaxed at Old Trafford.
But Balague, speaking on Sky Sports, noted that the keeper would once again be on Madrid’s radar in the summer.
“I don’t think a new contract is in the equation just yet,” he said.
“It’s definite that Real Madrid have got De Gea or Thibaut Courtois as a target for next season. I think Courtois is easier.
“De Gea actually told team-mates in the national side that he was going to Real Madrid, as you’ve seen in the last couple of years, it’s not as easy as that.”
Madrid seemed to have finally veered away from De Gea – like a man who, three years after his divorce, takes up stamp collecting or something – and steered their focus towards Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga instead.
But the 23-year-old’s recent decision to pen a new contract with his current club has added new flames to the saga.
You sense that the European champions will go after a replacement for Keylor Navas in the summer, among many other positions, but we ought to remember that De Gea doesn’t feel the same way about the move as he did in 2015. He is far more relaxed at Old Trafford and the club don’t appear to be stressing over losing possibly their most prized asset over the summer.
