Paul Pogba deserved to be dropped by Jose Mourinho after his poor performance against Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, argues Gary Neville.
The Sky Sports pundit said Pogba could have no complaints about being shunted on the substitutes bench on Saturday afternoon as Manchester United bounced back from defeat to Spurs with a comfortable 2-0 win against Huddersfield Town.
Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Anthony Martial were all also subjected to a benching, and it was deserved for the entirety of the quartet, according to Neville.
“I don’t think Pogba, Jones, Young and Martial can have any complaints about being left out after that game the other night, because they were really poor,” Neville told Sky Sports.
He went on to emphasise Pogba in particularly arguing that him being dropped could prove to be lesson from Mourinho
“For Pogba in particular, it was obvious Mourinho was furious with him at times during the game,” Neville said, after the pair chatted angrily on the touchline at Wembley midway through the game.
“Maybe Jose’s thought he needs a bit of a lesson. This could be a message to the dressing room. Managers have to show they are in control.”
While it was a big story of the day, there wasn’t a huge hysteria around Pogba being dropped due to the result. Inside the dressing room, however, it sends a message to Pogba personally and to the whole side that no one is undroppable.
