Luis Enrique would be the perfect man to replace Antonio Conte in the managerial hot seat at Chelsea, according to Albert Ferrer.
Speaking exclusively to ESPN, the former Blues defender discussed the club’s currently scrutinised managerial situation and backed Enrique, fondly known as Lucho, as a strong candidate to take the reins at Stamford Bridge.
Lucho’s a different type of manager [to current Barca boss Ernesto Valverde]. He had great years here with Barcelona and he’d already shown at Celta [Vigo] that he’s a great manager.
Enrique has been out of work since he was dismissed by Barcelona at the end of last season. His side struggled to compete with Real Madrid in La Liga but have seen their fortunes change under Ernesto Valverde this season.
The Spaniard is held in high esteem nonetheless, though, and Ferrer has backed Enrique to replace Conte if the Italian does indeed depart the club at the end of the season.
As a coach, he wants his teams to be aggressive, to be committed. I think he would fit in perfectly [at Chelsea], and there are already several Spanish players there. It’s true that speaking English is important, above all to try and transmit your ideas, but Lucho has been learning [English].
But I think above all the tone of how you transmit your ideas is more important, how you get through to the players, and there are many ways to do that.
Former Roma boss Enrique is understood to be keen on the prospect of managing in the Premier League and managing Chelsea is likely to be an attractive job should it become an option.
I think the adaption [from La Liga to the Premier League] is much easier than it was in the past, and in the case that Lucho goes to Chelsea I’m sure that he would be successful.
For now, though, Conte is in charge and he has often reiterated his intention to see out his contract at Chelsea, which runs until the end of the 2018/19 season.
