Eden Hazard believes that playing as a false nine does not bring the best out of his game.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Barcelona, as reported by the Mirror, the Belgian has stated his preference to play either out wide or as a number 10.
I might have touched 25 balls that night and 15 of them were flying towards my head. That is not really playing to my qualities. I won some aerial duels against Gerard Pique, and that’s not bad.
But if I had to choose, I prefer to play like I did in the last 10 minutes, which was out wide. But it’s the manager who has the final word. On the wing I feel more comfortable. That’s my place.
Antonio Conte made a bold selection choice when he named Hazard as Chelsea’s central striker against Barcelona.
The Belgian was tasked with playing the ‘false nine’ role with both Pedro and Willian playing out wide beside him.
With concerns over both Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud, Conte opted to start the Belgian centrally, offering his team more freedom to rotate in the final third.
Hazard impressed on Tuesday night but was slightly limited in his performance as a result of playing centrally.
During his time in France with Lille, Hazard played predominantly as a number 10, however, since joining Chelsea he has made a name for himself on the left.
