Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has been discussing how he intends to utilise his attacking options between now and the end of the season.
The Italian boss addressed the media today ahead of his side’s game against Hull City in the FA Cup on Friday night. As quoted by Football London, Conte mused over the possibility of making use of a three-man midfield to enable his attacking players to flourish.
In the future it could happen if we decide to play with three midfielders. Now I think it’s very soon to answer this question. We are playing with a system from last season and in this case it means Hazard, Pedro and Willian are out.
Conte has often made use of his favoured three at the back system, with two wing-backs flanking a pair of central midfielders. However, with this formation has been much maligned at times this season, with accusations made that the approach is too conservative.
Later on, Conte was quizzed over the impact of Olivier Giroud following his move from Arsenal. The Frenchman will act as stiff competition for Alvaro Morata up front but Conte feels this added pressure will not faze the ex-Real Madrid forward.
I don’t know. I think Alvaro is a player with a good responsibility and maturity. The competition is good, good for the team. I think a great team must have competition in every position, in every role.
Conte was also quick to lavish praise on Giroud.
For us, Giroud is a good option. He’s very strong, powerful player and he can help us for the rest of the season.
