Olivier Giroud has revealed that he is relieved to have finally gotten off the mark for Chelsea, having scored against Hull City in their 4-0 victory in the FA Cup fifth round.
Along with Giroud, Pedro and a Willian brace saw Hull off comprehensibly, with fellow new boy Emerson Palmieri setting up the French striker.
Giroud had failed to score in his previous three appearances for the Blues, and was beginning to build up pressure with Michy Batshuayi doing so well with Borussia Dortmund, with the Belgian having scored five goals in his first three games in Germany. Talking to BT Sport at fulltime, Giroud said;
To be honest, I was waiting for it.
I had a couple of chances in the previous game. It was very important for me to score this first goal and it relieves me a little bit.
Giroud also spoke about how he’s fitting into Antonio Conte’s team, pointing to his assists as evidence that he’s settled in well despite his new club’s poor recent form.
I assisted Eden (Hazard) last time and today I set up Willian’s one and I’m very happy and I take a lot of pleasure on the pitch.
You can see the team has good team cohesion and it was very important to bounce back from the two games before, the West Brom game. We’ve been through a disappointing result. It’s very nice. Two clean sheets. Seven goals. Very good for the confidence. It’s what we needed.
We need momentum. Everything is going in the right way. We’re very pleased with these two last games so let’s carry on.
