Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Alexis Sanchez travelled up north today to put the final touches to his move to Manchester United this month.
It was revealed by Craig Norwood at half time of Man United’s 1-0 win over Burnley earlier today that the 28-year-old would undergo a medical at Carrington in less than 48 hours, with some reports suggesting it could happen tonight.
Reports then came out after the game claiming that a deal had been struck with Arsenal for Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who will go the other way, on Saturday morning after a week of negations.
And Wenger, when asked about Sanchez’s absence from the squad for their 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, noted that the Chilean was travelling up to Manchester.
“I didn’t take him because there is question of him moving to Manchester United and you cannot drive up north and as well play football,” he said. “That’s difficult so that’s why I decided to leave him out.”
“I expect it to happen maybe but I cannot announce it because in the next 48 hours it will be decided one way or the other. In these king of things, as long as it’s not over the line you cannot say it will happen because the negotiations become more and more longer and edgy because every detail becomes important nowadays.
“If you want to have a bet, it could happen.
“It happens only one way, if the other way happens as well, that’s why it takes longer as well because it has to be co-ordinated.”
Mino Raiola was showing plenty of signs to suggest that he would turn this saga into a protracted affair, ending, of course, in a gross amount of money going his way, but it seems like Sanchez has been handed the green light over the last 24 hours to set off for Manchester.
The hard part is certainly over. There can be no doubts whatsoever now that Jose Mourinho, having called on the board to show more ambition last month, has confiscated Arsenal’s biggest goal threat whilst getting rid of a miserably inconsistent Mkhitaryan.
