Manchester United had to show ‘character’ to triumph against Burnley on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League.
The Reds beat eighth-placed Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor thanks to an excellent finish from in-form French striker Anthony Martial after Romelu Lukaku showed his strength with a great piece of hold-up play to create the chance.
The three points takes Man United to nine points off local title rivals Manchester City, who play Newcastle United on Saturday evening.
Burnley threatened at times throughout the 90 minutes, and United were far from convincing, including Paul Pogba, who had been in fantastic form prior to Saturday’s game.
“It was certainly a battle and that is what you get when you come to Turf Moor – it is about character and we showed that in abundance today,” Jones said.
“You have seen teams come here all season and drop points, we had to bide our time and when we got our chance thankfully Martial took it.
“We have some fantastic talent in the squad and we need everybody, especially going into a busy period.”
United weren’t at their best against Burnley as a team. Jones, however, was a serious contender for Man of the Match, and Martial’s goal shouldn’t overshadow the quality of Jones’ defensive play.
The Englishman led United’s defence perfectly and shored up a side that was leaking chances to Burnley and continually losing possession with alarming frequency. He’s been consistently impressive this season and has had better luck with injuries than in previous campaigns, despite being ruled out at times during the autumn period.
