Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has aimed to grab more goals for the club in the second half of the Premier League campaign.
The England international has only scored a single goal for the Red Devils this season and is targeting more to perhaps convince Jose Mourinho to keep him in the starting XI more often.
Smalling doesn’t have particularly have a reputation as a goal scoring centre-back despite his height often leaving pundits to assume he’s a threat from set pieces.
In his whole career at the club he’s managed 15 goals which is a decent number all things considered but it looks minuscule in comparison to Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos who has 72 to his name.
Getting a goalscoring edge will certainly give the former Fulham man an advantage compared to his colleagues in defence who aren’t known for their threats from set pieces either.
According to United Review, Chris said: “I am disappointed I haven’t had more goals this season. Especially with my friends often saying that I get one good chance in most games.
“So, really, I should have had at least four or five already. I need to make sure I do a bit better in the second half of the campaign in terms of goalscoring form because, as defenders, ours are crucial to add the team.
“I am getting in those positions. I am often getting a chance a game now, so I think I will keep putting myself in there and, hopefully, help make an impact.”
Chris Smalling has plenty of fighting left to do if he wishes to become Manchester United’s first choice centre-back consistently.
Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and even youngster Axel Tuanzebe provide stiff competition for the only two spots available in the starting XI.
United have occasionally experimented with a back three which has helped with excessive numbers in centre-back but it’s unlikely to be Mourinho’s preferred long term formation.
Perhaps Jose’s overstocked the defence due to the backline’s injury proneness that has even exposed itself once more this season.
With the heavy winter period all but done however, may be Smalling can take advantage of some absent colleagues and nail his spot down in the first team.
