Former Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has claimed that the club treated him horribly when they decided to let him go.
The Dutch coach joined the Red Devils after David Moyes’ ill fated reign and there was plenty of excitement from fans after his successes with his national side in the 2014 World Cup.
Van Gaal had taken a poor Netherlands team further than most expected, playing adventurous, easy on the eye football as well.
However, the expectations proved too much for him despite taking United back into Champions League football on his first try.
With the club missing out on Europe’s top cup competition in his second season in charge, the board decided to cut ties and bring in Jose Mourinho.
According to De Volkskrant, Louis said: “I think the manner in which Manchester United treated me was horrible, and treacherous as well. I had plenty of offers of work after I left United.
“The Belgian FA wanted me to become their national coach. But I couldn’t take a job with anyone for a year, because of the conditions United attached to my severance payment.
“So I missed out on the Belgium job, among others, despite thinking it would be a terrific challenge. I felt so resentful about letting this opportunity slip.
“It was stupid, as sporting considerations are the most important. But back then I felt it was more about taking revenge on United, and that they should have to pay me the maximum amount.”
Louis Van Gaal‘s assessment of being treated poorly may be closer to the truth than most Manchester United fans would care to admit.
Although most will agree that the former Barcelona man was regressing the club in his second season, he did still manage to win an FA Cup trophy.
Rumours say that it was amidst the celebrations that the United board decided to dismiss Van Gaal, not even allowing him to enjoy the success he had just helped contribute to.
Whether a third season would’ve helped the Dutchman or not no one will ever know with the hierarchy at the club not willing to let an unemployed Jose Mourinho slip out of their grasp.
The Portuguese manager at least vindicated their decision, winning the Europa League and League Cup trophies to send the Red Devils back into Champions League football.
