Alexis Sanchez rejected a move to Manchester City this month amid concerns over the amount of playing time he would receive under Pep Guardiola.
The Chile international was on the verge of moving to the Ethiad back in the summer, with Man City bidding £60m, but the deal didn’t get over the line.
City were once again favourites to sign him over the January transfer window until Manchester United came in with an improved offer. Sanchez agreed a four-year deal on Wednesday and will officially join the club once Henrikh Mkhitaryan agrees to go the other way.
And according to M.E.N‘s James Robson, the 29-year-old did not push for a move to City due to reservations over Guardiola’s rotation policy in attack.
This entire saga has ruthlessly challenged the notion that every player would drop to their knees to play for Guardiola – a man of style, purity, microscopic detail and, of course, a track record for scalping silverware that renders him somewhat unique, like a bald angel of some sort.
But there is more to him than that. There are conditions that every player must meet: an unyielding reciprocity with teammates, a willingness to miss out on big games from time to time, forensic positional understanding.
And Sanchez clearly wasn’t on board with all of this. He is a player who does things in his own way, taking matters into his own hands and stretching every sinew to be the deciding factor in games. And make no mistake: there aren’t many players who would resent being rotated more than him.
Under Mourinho, a manager who has always let his attacking players make their own decisions on the pitch, he will have license to assert himself fully, without much tactical responsibly or the fear of missing out on games throughout the season.
