Sergio Romero is eyeing a move away from Manchester United in January to secure more game time ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, according to reports.
The Argentine played an important under Jose Mourinho last season, claiming eight clean sheets during Man United’s triumphant Europa League campaign.
But the club’s return to the Champions League has meant fewer opportunities this season for the 30-year-old, who has only made five appearances in total.
And according to the Independent‘s Miguel Delaney, Romero will seek a move away this month in order to fend off competition from Real Sociedad’s Geronimo Rulli and consolidate his starting place under manager Jorge Sampaoli, who has warned his players that they need to be playing regular football to be sure of a place in the squad.
A source close the player said: “Sergio has offers from the Premier League, Argentina and Spain. He knows he needs to play and the appropriate people in Manchester are aware too.”
You can fully understand Romero’s anxiety surrounding his No.1 spot for the national side – despite occupying the role largely uninterrupted since 2010 – ahead of the World Cup.
Sampaoli will be keen to enforce some much needed change within his side following a poor qualification campaign, made successful purely through the genius of Lionel Messi, and Romero needs to ensure that he isn’t a victim of the flux that will take place over the next few months.
