Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has claimed that Manchester United target Ryan Sessegnon’s future is out of his hands.
Jose Mourinho’s interest in Sessegnon dates back to his first season in charge at Old Trafford when the youngster, aged just 16, established himself as a regular starter for the Championship side.
He has since signed a new deal at Fulham, but his performances this season – most recently against Ipswich Town, where he claimed two goals and an assist – have continued to pique the interest of big clubs.
And Jokanovic, speaking after the game, made it clear that the player doesn’t want to leave at this moment in time but admitted he had little control over his future.
“I don’t know if these clubs are interested in this player,” he said. “People around him are clever enough to know that after 50 games for us he is in a very good situation.”
“We will see what people around him and what Fulham are going to decide. I don’t have information about whether Fulham are going to sell. This decision is not in my hands. It is not my decision.
“But Fulham don’t want to sell him and the kid doesn’t say anything, so I am thinking about him for the future for the season ahead of us.”
There is something truly special about this kid. He was born in the 21st century and already has 57 appearances under his belt, claiming 14 goals despite generally playing at left-back.
And while he doesn’t serve as the current answer to Mourinho’s immediate problems at full-back, you can see exactly why Man United are keeping a very close eye on his progress. This is somebody whose early career trajectory outstrips almost anyone – especially players from England – and you can only expect him to continue in the same vein over the next few years.
In the meantime, though, Mourinho ought to be looking at the likes of Alex Sandro and Fawuzi Ghoulam as potential readymade reinforcements for this month.
