Manchester United must keep this player for his whole career with a new contract, Mourinho admits

Manchester United will offer David de Gea a new contract in their bid to secure his long-term future at the club.

The Spaniard has been perennially linked to Spanish giants Real Madrid, with the combination of playing for Los Blancos and returning to his home city of Madrid being an understandably attractive one.

However, despite coming close to leaving the club in 2015, when an administrative error saw the move fall through, De Gea remains at Old Trafford.

His current deal runs out in 2019, though there’s an option of a one-year contract extension that Man United could trigger.

Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed ahead of the weekend’s fixtures that the Reds will use that option and offer De Gea a new deal imminently.

“It’s obvious that we are not going to let the option [to extend his deal] disappear,” Mourinho explained at his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday night’s game against Stoke City.

“A goalkeeper like he is, at a club that wants to be better and better and better – we are not going to let that option go away. We are going to try.

“[Executive vice-chairman] Mr Woodward is not on holiday – he barely has holidays – and of course he is going to try to give him a contract that keeps him here for much more than the option that, of course, we are going to execute.”

Questioned whether talks are already underway for a new deal for De Gea, now 27 and in his seventh season at Old Trafford, Mourinho said he’s not involved in the process.

“I don’t know,” the boss replied. “I just trust the board and the work they do. I don’t negotiate players; I don’t discuss numbers and contracts.

“I just say what is obvious and any one of you would say the same: David is to keep.”

If De Gea signs a new five-year deal, which would be the expected amount of time, he could become one of the club’s all-time top appearance makers, already closing in on 300.
