Manchester United are facing competition from Guangzhou Evergrande to sign Gareth Bale after the Chinese Super League side launched a £84m bid for the Welshman, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho noted last summer that he would pursue Bale if he was available, only for Zinedine Zidane to insist he wasn’t for sale.
But following a string of injuries and Real Madrid’s slump in form this season, Florentino Perez has agreed to let Bale leave next summer as he seeks to replenish the side’s attacking options.
And according to Spanish media outlet Don Balon, Guangzhou have made a massive statement by offering Madrid £84m – satisfying their asking price of £80m – for the winger’s services.
The 28-year-old’s record of only making seven La Liga appearances this term through injury provides cause for concern, but his recent displays following the winter break – including a winning goal in the Copa del Rey and a brace against Celta Vigo – ought to be viewed as reminders of the cut-throat talent he still undoubtedly possesses.
And while other wide players have emerged on United’s radar, such as Christian Pulisic, Lucas Moura and Malcom, none of them possess the temperament for the biggest of stages like Bale, who would probably think of Old Trafford and the Premier League as a tea party in comparison to what he has experienced at the Bernabeu.
