Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has insisted that Paulo Dybala doesn’t have the skillet to play at a big club like Manchester United.
Attempts were made to sign the Argentine forward during his time at Palermo in 2015 but he joined the Old Lady instead.
Man United’s interest in the forward has persisted under Jose Mourinho, however, with the club reportedly offering the Serie A champions £70m plus Henrikh Mkhitaryan to secure his signature.
But Allegri has interestingly claimed that Dybala doesn’t have what it takes to succeed at a big club, noting that the 24-year-old can’t function in tight spaces when the opposition sits back.
“He cannot play centre-forward for a big club, where the distance to goal is much shorter,” he said. “Just look at his best goals for Juve: they’re often when he’s running from deeper positions.”
This is a scathing thing to publicly claim about one of your best players but the United hierarchy should take note of it. Dybala is an undoubtedly fierce player when he gets in full flow but can dwindle when he isn’t afforded the space he needs – a reason, perhaps, for his sporadic involvement under Jorge Sampaoli for Argentina.
Jose Mourinho will need to pursue a dynamic forward capable of associative ability to function in tight areas and Dybala, at least for now, doesn’t seem like the answer.
