Jose Mourinho has expressed his delight at being able to sign Alexis Sanchez for ‘free’.
The Portuguese will have undoubtedly frustrated Arsenal fans by describing his new forward as ‘cheap’.
Sanchez signed for Manchester United last Monday on a four-and-half-year deal. Mourinho paid no transfer fee for a world-class player, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is the same age, going the other way in a rare straight player swap deal.
United were criticised for the high wages they are paying Sanchez. Mourinho hit back in jokey fashion.
“He was cheap wasn’t he? Free transfer! He was free,” Mourinho said, grinning slightly. “So for that price he’s fantastic.
“I think everybody thinks the same in this country. Everyone has to agree that he is a fantastic player and the team that got him has a plus.”
Manchester City, in particular, have tried to peddle a crazy idea that Sanchez was just too expensive for them and that they would never pay players such money. Given they were prepared to do so in the summer transfer window, as well as then paying a £60m, it’s nonsensical.
Mourinho was joking, but United have got Sanchez for nothing, it’s a brilliant deal. He may be being paid massive wages, but with no transfer fee and the wages of Henrikh Mkhitaryan off the books, it’s still a great piece of business.
“We have a good group of attacking players you could see today we played with three of them,” Mourinho continued.
“[Jesse] Lingard was on the bench, [Romelu] Lukaku was on the bench, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] at home, [Anthony] Martial at home. So we have a good group.
“His [Sanchez] quality is a plus and his experience is another plus.”
