Dwight Yorke has insisted there should be no worries about the development of Marcus Rashford being negatively affected by Manchester United’s recent signing of Alexis Sanchez.
With Rashford in a tricky goalscoring patch recently, he’s yet to start a league game since the turn of the year, though he’s maintained a remarkable record of playing in every game in all competitions this season for Man United.
Sanchez signed a four-and-a-half year deal at the club on Monday evening in a move that Henrikh Mkhitaryan join Arsenal in a straight player-swap deal.
Some have suggested the arrival of Sanchez, a world-class forward who can play on the left flank or up front (Rashford’s two positions) will see the young Englishman’s chances decrease under Jose Mourinho.
“No, not at all (you shouldn’t worry about Rashford),” Yorke insisted to Sky Sports on Tuesday evening. told Sky Sports this evening.
“We all know what Rashford can do, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. He still has a little bit of time.”
Sanchez’s arrival will both ensure that Rashford continues to work hard, as competition in a squad always does, and will allow him, as well as Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, to learn from Sanchez on a number of fronts.
“What it does do it does makes him think and realise that he has to continue to work harder to get into the team, that can only be a good thing,” Yorke said.
“When you have quality players coming to the football club you want to try and improve these players.
“These players, although they’re working hard already, they will work even further when they see the kind of quality they bring in.
“You see at Manchester United over the years they have always brought in players that younger players can look up to.
“There’s no doubt that Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, even (Jesse) Lingard will also learn from Sanchez.
“Not just with his work ethic but what it takes to be a top player on a consistent basis, which Sanchez has been able to produce since he arrived in this country.”
Rashford has already had the chance to learn from Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as well as Harry Kane with England. Sanchez will only help him, and with the Chilean looking set to play either in the number 10 role or on the right of a forward line, his chances shouldn’t be affected.
What would harm Rashford would be Sanchez filling in for Romelu Lukaku up front instead of the 20-year-old when the Belgian forward is injured.
