Dwight Yorke has compared new Manchester United signing Alexis Sanchez to one former Reds striker in particular.
Sanchez, who signed a four-and-a-half year contract at Old Trafford on Monday evening, could be a player in the ‘mould of Carlos Tevez’ for United, the bullying force in Man United’s attack in their 2008 UEFA Champions League-Premier League double-winning season.
Tevez is a hate-figure at United these days after joining Manchester City after only a couple of seasons at the club, but most supporters recognise the quality that the Argentine forward gave to that 2008 side.
If Sanchez can replicate Tevez, without ending his United career in the same way, United fans will be delighted.
“I think he will be a great signing for us,” Yorke said, “especially with the young attacking strikers that we have and the experience he will bring.
“To me, he is in the mould of Tevez. He’s one of those players that cause defenders nightmares, his work ethic is absolutely unbelievable.
“He does bring a real good spirit to the team, so, all in all, I think it’s a great deal.
“The money doesn’t really come into the matter in my opinion.”
Yorke also compared Sanchez to current United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the injured talismanic figure who scored 28 times last season and dragged the Reds to EFL Cup glory at Wembley.
“What we have here with Zlatan when he first came to the club is a sort of aura that he brings, the sort of presence that he also has,” Yorke added.
“I think this guy [Sanchez] does that and I think these younger players will learn from him as well.”
