Chelsea drew yet another game in 2018 but scraped through to the next round of the FA Cup thanks to the penalty shoot-out heroics of Willy Caballero.
Chelsea hadn’t struck a goal let alone winning a game this year and against a well drilled but ultimately vulnerable Norwich side the Blues’ toils in front of goal continued as they failed to create any openings, especially in the first-half, in a game that was crying out for an attacking midfielder like the yet unregistered Ross Barkley. Danny Drinkwater hit the bar with a rasping drive, but even Norwich, with their defensive set up, were able to strike back against Chelsea’s lethargic and slow backline as they too hit the woodwork.
The second-half consisted of foul upon foul upon foul, with most going unpunished as the referee failed to effectively punish Norwich for their cynical play, although Pedro was correctly booked for diving.
Michy Batshuayi, who had been poor throughout, did finally break the deadlock after 145 minutes of play between the two teams, seemingly sending Chelsea through by the thinnest of margins.
Norwich, however, had other ideas as they piled on the pressure late on, hitting the post before Jamal Lewis headed in with just seconds to play to take the game to extra-time before VAR controversy arose in the proceeding 30 minutes.
Both Pedro and Morata were sent off, the latter for protesting his suspected dive, before Chelsea were denied a clear penalty by both the referee and VAR when Willian was fouled in the box.
There were no more goals though and the resulting penalty shoot-out saw Caballero save Nélson Oliveira’s penalty before Hazard wrapped up the spot kicks with a calm finish to send Chelsea through to the next round.
