A double from Michy Batshuayi alongside Marcos Alonso’s superb free-kick ensured that a strong Chelsea side coasted into round five of the FA Cup.
The Blues hardly had to step out of second gear all game, but it did still take 33 minutes for Batshuayi to tap home the opening goal as the ball broke to him via Alonso’s neat lay-off under pressure.
The Belgian forward, despite scoring 10 goals in 10 starts this season – not including his numerous substitute appearances, has come under a fire for his less than energetic performances at times, but today he proved at least some of his doubters wrong by putting Chelsea out of sight before half-time with a heavily deflected strike on 44 minutes.
Newcastle did create chances themselves and if it were not for the quick reactions of Willy Caballero, the Magpies could’ve found a route back into the game. Instead, however, it would be Alonso to strike the decisive goal as he stepped up and curled in a trademark free-kick with his wand of a left boot.
A debut was also given to youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi, whilst Ross Barkley made his first home appearance in the second-half.
