David de Gea was made a promise by agent Jorge Mendes that he’d move to Real Madrid in future, it has been claimed.
The Spaniard is perennially linked with the European champions and is reportedly the target of a £100m summer goalkeeping upgrade.
Rumours will never die down, but De Gea is also in talks with Man United over a contract extension. Now in his seventh season at the club, he’s the most important player the Reds have and is utterly irreplaceable.
El Confidencial, a Spanish outlet, claim that Mendes promised he would take De Gea to Los Blancos one day when he convinced the goalkeeper to become one of his clients.
They also suggest that De Gea, having come close to signing for Real in 2015, doesn’t want to miss the next ‘train’ of Real Madrid.
“It was a firm promise made to the player and his closest relatives,” the paper writes.
“Now it seems that everything has been aligned correctly for De Gea to make his move to the Bernabéu. He knows that there are movements around him and that now is the time for patience.”
That doesn’t seem entirely in line with other reports or comments from United boss Jose Mourinho or the player himself.
There have previously been suggestions that De Gea was frustrated by Real Madrid’s inability to complete a deal in the summer of 2015. He was very close to leaving United, but administration errors saw a deadline day move fall through.
The Spanish club had three months to wrap up a deal and didn’t. De Gea signed a new contract at Old Trafford just a couple of weeks later.
Other recent reports indicate that Real will back away and look to alternatives if United demand more than £100m for De Gea. The obvious route for United to take then, is to demand more than £100m.
