Alan Shearer has insisted that Alexis Sanchez’s decision to join Manchester United will not be based on money.
The Chilean forward looks set to sign for the Reds in the coming day after local title rivals Manchester City pulled out of the deal due to the finances.
Man United are willing to pay Arsenal’s asking price of £35m as well as high agent fees and huge wages for Sanchez, whereas City have baulked at such fees given the 29-year-old’s contract runs out in the summer.
However, the suggestion that Sanchez would only choose United over City due to the wages is prosperous given that the Blues were prepared to make him their highest-paid player.
“United are supposedly willing to pay £35m for a player who has only got a few months left on his contract, which might seem a lot,” Shearer conceded.
“But a player of Alexis’ class with 18 months left would go for about £80-90m nowadays so it would still be decent business.”
Some journalists and ex-players have argued that it’s a choice between playing for Pep Guardiola and the money of United, conveniently ignoring the fact that the Reds are the biggest football club in the world and England’s most successful side with three trophies in the last two seasons.
“[Pep] Guardiola might be having the greater impact at the moment but Mourinho is still a top manager, and also has a fantastic record wherever he has been,” Shearer pointed out.
“So Sanchez would still have a good chance of success at United, and he’d also walk straight into their team.
“It will be his decision and, whether he ends up at City or United, it will have nothing to do with finances for him because, wherever he goes, he is going to be a very wealthy man.”
