Alexis Sanchez’s imminent arrival at Manchester United has turned this weekend’s visit to Burnley into a hotly anticipated affair across the globe.
Gianluca di Marzio and Arsene Wenger both confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old’s move to Old Trafford was imminent, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way in a straight swap deal.
And the Chile international will be available for selection at Turf Moor as long as he officially becomes a Man United player by midday on Friday – something both clubs will want to happen, you sense.
Here is how Jose Mourinho’s men could line up against Burnley with Sanchez coming straight into the starting XI.
The arrival of Sanchez bolsters Man United’s attacking options and, more importantly, adds another dimension to their attack.
Mourinho has desperately lacked the presence of a dynamic, cut-throat influence in confined spaces since arriving at Old Trafford but he now has somebody who will, over and over again, look to break down defenders in the final third without relenting.
He will want to give Alexis the chance to roam the pitch at Turf Moor – a ground he has already scored at this season – and using a three-at-the-back mould would allow him to seamlessly interchange with with Anthony Martial and link up with Paul Pogba, giving the visitors more leverage to maintain possession in the Burnley half.
Stopping Sean Dyche’s men from breaking out and giving Sanchez time on the ball seems like the right formula to take into this game.
