Cameron Borthwick-Jackson‘s loan at Leeds United has been cut short after failing to assert himself at the Championship side this season.
The 20-year-old impressed with a series of composed displays at full-back during the 2015/16 campaign, making ten Premier League appearances in total.
But he failed to make an impact on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers last season and has only made one Championship appearance for Leeds this year, attracting criticism from supporters for his display during their side’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Newport County.
And the club has confirmed that Borthwick-Jackson will return to Old Trafford this month – just five months into his season-long loan move.
Loan move are, of course, designed to advance careers and help players mature, but the case of Borthwick-Jackson shows how some can have a reverse effect.
The youngster looked like a player with the technical apparatus and sense of calm to succeed at the highest level, producing performances hallmarked by an admirable sense of control. He was easily on par in terms of quality with Axel Tuanzebe and Scott McTominay – two youngsters who have become first team regulars over the last year.
But following two years of turmoil and just 13 appearances, Borthwick-Jackson finds himself miles down the pecking order, his confidence depleted and future deeply uncertain.
