World-class Real Madrid midfielder has his say on Scholes-Gerrard-Lampard debate

Toni Kroos has waded into the decade-long debate of Scholes-Gerrard-Lampard, asserting his belief that Manchester United great Paul Scholes tops the trio.

The three Englishman played at the same time for their country during the ‘Golden Generation’, but with Scholes at Man United, Steven Gerrard was crucial for rivals Liverpool while Frank Lampard was part of the spine of Chelsea’s successful sides.

All three players have won the UEFA Champions League, though Scholes is by far the most successful player. Gerrard, of course, never lifted the Premier League title as a player.

Kroos answered a question on the contentious debate in a Question & Answer session on Twitter.

United fans, of course, will not be surprised by his answer. Scholes is often underappreciated in English football. At other points, his talent is overstated.

He was not one of United’s greatest ever players, but during his career, English football massively underappreciated his ability, playing him on the left flank for the Three Lions.

Scholes’ passing range and vision, the speed at which he could spot a pass and pull it off, was hardly paralleled in world football. In Europe, on the continent, as with Kroos, his abilities are far less frequently understated.

Kroos almost joined United back in 2014. David Moyes had reportedly lined up a deal for the then-Bayern Munich midfielder, but new manager Louis van Gaal dithered on the transfer and Real Madrid stepped in and took Kroos for a measly £24m.

Kroos could have been playing where Scholes had done had van Gaal not rejected the chance to sign him. United fans will certainly think they could do with a player of Kroos’ quality now, even after the signings of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.
