Arsene Wenger is reportedly “considering” a world-record move for Southampton centre-back, Virgil Van Dijk (via The Metro).
One thing is clear, Arsenal need reinforcement and improvement in a number of areas across the pitch.
One of those positions is at centre-back. the Gunners have conceded 20 goals in the Premier League this season, the same as Liverpool and more than the rest of the top seven.
With Per Mertesacker retiring at the end of the season and both Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny in their thirties, a new centre-back is needed and Arsene Wenger has reportedly found his man.
Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk is apparently the name at the top of Wenger’s list with the Frenchman weighing up the possibility of making a move for the Dutchman.
Reports suggest that Southampton will want as much as £70 million for the 26-year-old which would make him the most expensive defender of all time.
It’s unclear whether there is any truth in these reports. Virgil Van Dijk is clearly a hugely talented player who would improve almost any team on the planet but £70 million is a lot of money for a centre-back.
