Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that David Luiz’s knee injury is indeed a serious one.
As quoted by Goal, the Blues boss addressed the media on Friday afternoon ahead of his side’s game at home against Southampton on Saturday in the Premier League.
Conte’s relationship with Luiz has come under question on several occasions in the last few months, with the Brazilian having been sporadically used. Conte has now stated, though, that Luiz is struggling with an inflammation in his knee.
David has an inflammation in the knee and we are trying to solve this situation with the doctor. It’s important to assess the situation day by day and to try to solve this problem. I don’t know when he’s able to come back, but for sure we are trying to sort his situation.
Andreas Christensen is currently acting as a deputy to the former PSG man and is turning in some exceptional displays. The young Danish centre-back developed over the last two seasons at Borussia Monchengladbach and is progressing well in the Premier League.
Luiz is set to be injured for the foreseeable future, with Conte not giving away a timescale on the defender’s return.
The player is working apart [from the rest of the team] and the last days he was outside and in the pool. Today he was swimming and out on the pitch to run a bit, but very slowly. This is a serious problem, but we hope to solve it as soon as possible.
Losing such an influential figure to injury, regardless of his recent lack of involvement, is sure to come as a blow to Conte, who leads his side into a busy festive period.
