Paul Pogba has noted that Manchester United will benefit from Alexandre Lacazette’s absence for Arsenal on Saturday.
The Frenchman, who became the club’s record signing earlier this year, has netted seven goals in all competitions under Arsene Wenger so far this season.
But he was forced off with a groin problem at half time against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday and Wenger confirmed soon after that he would certainly miss the clash on Saturday.
And Pogba, speaking to MUTV, has noted that Lacazette, who looks set to be replaced by Danny Welbeck, will be a big miss for Arsenal going forward.
“Alex has been great and at this moment and he is scoring goals and playing well for the team,” he said.
“He is a big player for them and if he is not there I would say it is good for us. I hope for us that he doesn’t play because that will help us.
“But I also hope he doesn’t have a bad injury.”
We should always be cautious about placing significance on one player missing out on a contest between 22 well-drilled professionals.
But Wenger will know that losing Lacazette for a game of this nature could be problematic. The Frenchman is what you would label as a classic goalscorer – a man comes alive in the box whilst being limited in his abilities out of it.
And against a Mourinho side in what many are predicting to be a gritty encounter of fine margins, Lacazette’s golden touch could have been decisive. Sometimes you just need a chance to fall your striker’s way to decide a game like this: one crisp finish from a man who, over the years, has made exactly that his niche. Alvaro Morata’s perfectly placed header last month was a perfect example.
But we should be cautious of the threat posed by Welbeck as well. He netted the decisive second back in May and, if I’m honest, my heart cannot take seeing him score against United again.
