Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez says he is expecting a good reception from the Stamford Bridge faithful on Saturday as he returns to the club he previously managed.
The London Evening Standard reports that Benitez believes the Chelsea fans will be just fine with him when Newcastle travel to the Bridge for Saturday’s early kick-off.
I think the fans will be fine. The normal fans who you can find on the streets were okay with me. We finished third, like Abramovich wanted, to qualify straight for the Champions League. We did it and we won the Europa League in the meantime. I think the fans will be happy with that.
It was really positive there. I have a lot of friends there, the staff was really good and the fans were fine.
Benitez had a brief stint as the club’s interim manager after Roman Abramovich sacked popular manager Roberto Di Matteo, just months after the Italian had won the Champions League.
The appointment of the Spaniard did not go down well with among sections of the Chelsea supporters, due to both the manager’s connection with Liverpool and previous comments he had made about the club’s fans.
During his time at the club he helped guide the Blues into the top four and lifted the Europa League title thanks to a 2-1 win over Benfica in the final.
