Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that his team have been better than last season, using the current points collected as proof.
The Red Devils recently lost to fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford, meaning the gap between the two teams has extended to eleven points.
Most critics and fans have claimed that this means the title is out of reach for United, given how unlikely it is that an unbeaten City would drop the huge number of points.
The two clubs will lock horns once more before the season’s over and Pep Guardiola has insisted that no team can win the title by December, warning his side of complacency.
Mourinho though, was quick to point out to the positives, neither denying nor accepting the difference in points between both clubs, instead focussing on his own team.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Jose said: “I told you that when it [points gap] was eight we go match by match, try to win the match, try to get the maximum.
“The number of points we have, we had seven or eight less in this moment [last season], we try, last season we drew at home vs Bournemouth, let’s try to do better.”
Manchester United’s struggles last season were mainly down to drawing too many costly games against teams they should be brushing away.
This season that area has certainly been addressed but a new issue has arisen with the Red Devils having a pattern of underperforming against the ‘top six’.
Although there has been some misfortune, Mourinho’s tactics have hardly helped get anyone on board with fans and pundits alike criticising the defensive set up United often played in.
Against City in particular, two defensive mistakes from set pieces ultimately cost Jose the game and he’ll surely be cursing his luck given how his players, for the most part, kept the firing league leaders quiet.
