Manchester United and Manchester City will not face any formal action from the FA after players and staff clashed by the changing rooms after the derby earlier this month.
Jose Mourinho stormed into Manchester City’s dressing room after the game to tell the players, who were loudly celebrating a 2-1 win, to show some respect, prompting an argument with goalkeeper Ederson.
A brawl ensued after milk and water was thrown in the direction of Mourinho that culminated in Mikel Artera suffering a cut to his forehead.
The FA, having called for both clubs to submit their observations of the events, produced a statement on Thursday that read:
“Following a review of the evidence provided by the clubs and independent eyewitnesses The FA will be taking no formal action.”
There was no need to flesh out this event any further than needed, and the conflict which ensued appears to have been too populous, scrum-like to pick out any particular individuals, nor serious enough to merit punishment for every player or the clubs generally.
If anything, while we can easily question Mourinho’s decision to start attacking only once the full-time whistle was blown and the points lost, there was something warming about one of the most hyper-charged, commercialised sporting events of the year end in something real – two sides, often painted as mere sources of entertainment and profit, actually going at each other.
Hopefully Mourinho brings some pyro and mouldy milk for Man United’s trip to the Ethiad next year.
