Man United receive massive boost in their bid to keep this 27yo superstar

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has diffused speculation of a potential bid for David de Gea by insisting he was happy with the current options at his disposal.

The Spanish champions have been long-term admirers of the 27-year-old and came close to signing him back in 2015.

But De Gea signed a new contract at Old Trafford instead following a hilarious series of logistical blunders and has since asserted himself as the best goalkeeper in the world.

And Zidane, speaking after his side’s 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund, made it clear that he wasn’t assessing any other options between the sticks despite continue doubts over first choice Keylor Navas.

“I have two goalkeepers, understand?” he said. “I am a Real Madrid coach and I am happy with my two goalkeepers, I will always say the same.”

“I saw Keylor well, although we can always give a little bit more, like always.”

Logic dictates that Madrid would always want the best shot-stopper in the world under their wing – especially with Navas continuing to look far from imposing whenever a long-range shot is fired in his direction – but you sense that Florentino Perez has pulled the plug on the deal for strictly political reasons.

Going back for De Gea would be tantamount with a kind of ideological regression and absence of fresh ideas that places Madrid, already looking behind the pace this season, in a stingy light. That ship has sailed, and at this level you cannot go back. It would be like the British government going: “You know what, why not give David Cameron another go?”

If Madrid do opt to sign a new shot-stopper next year, their attention will most likely revolve around the highly rated young Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
