Manchester United defender Phil Jones has insisted that the players showed courage in their narrow win vs Bournemouth.
The Cherries travelled to Old Trafford and put in an impressive display compared to United’s lacklustre performance.
The Red Devils did run out 1-0 winners though and ultimately came away with another crucial three points in the Premier League race.
United fell to a defeat in the Manchester derby before they faced Bournemouth but did not spend too much time licking their wounds.
Jose Mourinho called for his players to show extra desire to win after having lost to City and Jones praised both his teammates and fans.
Speaking to MUTV, Phil said: “It was difficult after the derby defeat. It was so disappointing in many ways because of the magnitude of the game and we wanted to do more.
“We wanted to win the game but, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. So we wanted to come out and show a bit of fire and a bit of courage, the players getting on the ball and trying to do something. It wasn’t pretty at times, we had to dig deep and grind it out.
“But the most important thing was to get the three points and get back on track. I would like to say ‘thank you’ to the fans because I think it was difficult for them on Sunday in the derby defeat.
“They stuck by us again when times are hard, they were singing, they were pushing for us and we need that for the whole season.”
Although a win against Bournemouth didn’t help Manchester United close the gap to rivals and league leaders Manchester City, it was still crucial to keep up the chase.
City lead 2nd placed United by 11 points and Mourinho’s side will need to keep plugging away if they want any slim chance of catching up to the Sky Blues.
Jose will also have to keep an eye over his shoulder as the rest of the ‘top six’ each try to solidify their spots in the Premier League’s Champions League qualification spots.
Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are all breathing down United’s neck and the Portuguese manager will be keen to ensure a loss doesn’t turn into a disaster.
Phil Jones‘ return to the first team though will be welcome to Mourinho at a time when Eric Bailly has been announced to have suffered a serious injury.
