Luke Shaw provided another emphatic message to his critics last night with an efficient, energetic display at left-back during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over AFC Bournemouth.
Jose Mourinho insisted that the Englishman, who had only made two substitute performances before December, would receive further opportunities following a superb display against CSKA Moscow.
And he has, somewhat crucially, breached the Portuguese’s Premier League plans at a time when Man United are in desperate need of some stability at left-back.
With that in mind, here is a potential XI for Sunday’s clash with West Bromwich Albion featuring Shaw and Antonio Valencia as wing-backs.
The 22-year-old brought a level of zip and effervesce to the left-back role on Wednesday night that supporters haven’t witnessed for some time. This is a man who, despite his confidence issues, looks almost possessed on the pitch, ferociously doing all he can to make up for lost time.
And with Mourinho’s men set to face up against a West Brom side that will benefit from keeping the game tight and compact, Shaw’s blistering influence at wing-back – coupled with the ever reliable Valencia – will be crucial for breaking up the game and getting the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford on the ball in the final third.
